The NHS Appointments Commission has announced its agreement to re-appoint two non-executive directors to NHS East Midlands’ board of directors.
Dr Stephen Goode and Professor David Chiddick will continue in their posts working alongside Chairman Sir John Brigstocke and Chief Executive Dr Barbara Hakin.
Professor Chiddick is Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lincoln. He began his career as a town planner with Hertfordshire County Council joining the academic world in 1979.
In 1985 he was appointed Professor of Land Economy at Leicester Polytechnic and following his appointment as Dean and Deputy Director was appointed Pro Vice-Chancellor at De Montfort University in 1992. From1993-2000 he was a non-executive director at Leicester Royal Infirmary.
Said Professor Chiddick: “I think it is an exciting time to be involved in the NHS and I am looking forward to seeing the vision for its future come to fruition.”
Dr Goode joined Nottingham Probation Service in 1977 after gaining an MA in Social Work and qualifying as a Probation Officer. In 1990 Steve was made Assistant Chief Officer and in 1997 was appointed Chief Probation Officer (CPO) in Derbyshire.
In 2003 he became interim CPO in South Wales and in the same year became leader of the Special Improvement Action Team in London. He then returned to Derbyshire for six months before becoming ROM (Regional Offender Manager) for West Midlands in December 2004.
Dr Goode has an MBA and a PhD and was awarded the CBE in 2002 for services to probation. He served as a member of the Parole Board from 2000 to 2006.
His current role is as a Deputy Director for the Ministry of Justice and he is appointed to the National Offender Management Services as Regional Manager of the West Midlands.
Said Dr Goode: “I am happy to continue this important role and help NHS East Midlands with the challenging work that lies ahead.”
Non-executive directors are paid remuneration of £7,882 per annum and both Professor Chiddick and Dr Goode have been appointed for four years from 1st July this year to 30th June 2013.
Michael Beaumont has also been reappointed as the Audit Chairman on NHS East Midlands Board for a further term from 1st July 2009 until 30th June 2013 and is entitled to remuneration totalling £13,136.
Michael is a chartered accountant with senior management experience in the accountancy profession, merchant banking, finance industry and public sector. He also worked as a business development consultant with Greater Nottingham Training and Enterprise Council and Business Link Greater Nottingham.
From 1993 to 2005 Michael was special trustee of NHS charitable funds at Queen's Medical Centre, Nottingham and, since 1996 has been actively involved at Board level in the NHS and the Health Protection Agency (HPA). He was appointed OBE in 1986 and CBE in 1997 for public and political services. Michael is also a non-executive Director of the HPA and until March was a member of the National Biological Standards Board.
NHS East Midlands was established on 1st July 2006, replacing Trent SHA and Leicestershire, Northamptonshire and Rutland Strategic Health Authority and Trent SHA.
The three re-appointed members will help steer the organisation as it provides strategic leadership to NHS organisations in the counties of Derbyshire, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire and Rutland. NHS East Midlands role is to ensure that local health systems operate effectively and efficiently and that national standards and priorities are met in order to continually improve services for patients.
The organisation works in partnership with the region’s health community, regional government and other bodies and is ultimately accountable to the Secretary of State for Health.
The appointment of non-executive directors and the Audit Chair is made in accordance with the Office of the Commissioner for Public Appointments’ code of practice. All non-executive appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees’ political activity over the last five years (if declared) to be made public. Professor Chiddick and Dr Goode have declared they have not been involved in any political activity. Michael has been involved with the Conservative Party. Unless otherwise stated above, the non-executive directors hold no other ministerial appointments.
