Sport & Exercise Medicine (SEM) is the first new medical specialty for over 25 years. The "Fresh Approach" document outlines how it delivers improved quality of care and productivity and why its establishment was one of the London 2012 Games bid commitments.
The guide has introductory comments from Downing Street and Lord Coe. It emphasises the importance of Sport & Exercise medicine in chronic disease management, the prescription of exercise to those patients with co-morbidity, the diagnosis and management of musculoskeletal injury and the education and training of allied professionals in these skills.
SEM services are flexible and can be delivered in primary, secondary and intermediate care settings as well as in public health.
NHS SEM services are available now and SEM doctors have been trained to deliver these services. If you would like to find out more, please contact Sue Snow at suemckinnon@nhs.net or Yvonne Gilbert at y.gilbert@fsem.ac.uk.
The ‘Sport and Exercise Medicine – A Fresh Approach’ report has been produced as part of a programme to promote Sport and Exercise Medicine in the NHS.
