Access to Cancer Drug Fund

Can you confirm what the arrangements would be if a patient who has originally had access to a new medicine through private funding then applies to the CDF for funding (when their funding runs out) - would the CDF fund the patient? Many thanks

Our Response

I refer to your email querying if a patient who has originally had access to a new medicine through private funding would subsequently be entitled to funding from the Cancer Drug Fund (CDF). 

I can confirm in accordance with S.1 (1) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA) that we do hold this information. 

Applications to the fund are made by clinicians to a clinical panel.  The clinical panel decides whether or not to approve the request based on a set of principles that have been agreed locally.   Whether or not  a patient had previously accessed a drug through private funding would have no bearing on the outcome.
