Water Fluoridation

Request

Dear Sir,

I have been in correspondence with Nottinghamshire County PCT (ref FOI Request 658/25052010) trying to find out what has happened to £4.2 million of Department of Health funding.  The details of the funding are as follows:-

Primary Care Trust                   Cost (£)                        Summary of Work
2008/2009               Nottinghamshire County          6000                             Replacement of tank at Budby water treatment works operated by Severn Trent Water

2009/2010              Nottinghamshire County            0.89 million                Replacement of tank at Budby water treatment works operated by Severn Trent Water

2010/2011             Nottinghamshire County           3.3 million                   Replacement and refurbishment of fluoridation plants operated by Anglian Water

I have been trying to find out details of WHAT the money is being/has been spent on and WHY it was needed. Nottingham County PCT has been unable to provide me with this information and have referred me to you.  I would be most grateful for your help in answering my questions.

I look forward to your earliest possible response.

Our Response

I refer to your email of 3 July requesting information in respect of Department of Health funding around water fluoridation.

After considering the substance of your request it has been assessed as falling within the ambit of the Environmental Information Regulations 2004. I can confirm that NHS East Midlands does hold the information you have requested.

In 2009/10 NHS Nottinghamshire County was allocated £890k from the Department of Health as the first year of funding to update water fluoridation plans within the East Midlands.

Of that funding, £65k as paid to the Severn Trent Water http://www.stwater.co.uk/ for works carried out.  The remaining funds were reclaimed by the Department of Health as underspend.

The money was spent on initial works leading to the upgrade of Fluoridation plants to comply with current codes of practice.

I hope that this information is of use.  If you are dissatisfied with the way in which we have dealt with your request you can ask us to review our decision by writing to:-
