CRB Usage

Request

I would like to make a Freedom of Information request on the subject of CRB usage within the trust, for research purposes. My specific questions are as follows:

  • How many Enhanced CRB applications did you make in the period Jan-Dec 2009.

  • Do you make CRB applications directly (ie the trust is a CRB registered body), or via an umbrella company, if so what is the name of this company?

  • Do you use an online system, or fill in a paper form?

  • How much do you currently pay for Enhanced CRBs per application?

  • Who is the person (name and job title) responsible for CRB applications in the trust.

  • Does the trust have a policy on how long a CRB is valid, ie how long until an employee has to renew his CRB?

  • How many staff are employed by the trust (substantive and temp)?

  • How many NEW staff were employed by the trust in the period Jan-Dec 2009 (substantive and temp)?

Our Response

I refer to your email requesting information in respect of CRB usage.

I can confirm in accordance with S.1 (1) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000, that we do hold the information that you have requested.

However, the information that we hold refers to NHS East Midlands as a Strategic Health Authority only.  I would point out to you that NHS East Midlands is not a Trust and has no direct responsibility for front line patient care.  Our role is to relay and explain national policy, set direction and support and develop all NHS Trust bodies ensuring that the local health systems operate effectively and efficiently for our population.

I will address each of your questions in turn:-

  • How many Enhanced CRB applications did you make in the period Jan-Dec 2009.
Ten (10) enhanced CRB applications were made by NHS East Midlands in the period Jan-Dec 2009

  • Do you make CRB applications directly (i.e. the trust is a CRB registered body), or via an umbrella company, if so what is the name of this company?
NHS East Midlands engages the services of Derbyshire County Primary Care Trust (PCT) to undertake all CRB checks on our behalf.

  • Do you use an online system, or fill in a paper form?
NHS East Midlands uses the paper system.

  • How much do you currently pay for Enhanced CRBs per application?
NHS East Midlands pays NHS Derbyshire County Primary Care Trust £61.00 for each application.

  • Who is the person (name and job title) responsible for CRB applications in the trust.
Nicola Awni, HR Director,  is responsible for CRB applications within NHS East Midlands.

  • Does the trust have a policy on how long a CRB is valid, i.e. how long until an employee has to renew his CRB?
NHS East Midlands follows NHS Employment Check Standards which are mandatory for the NHS.  We normally undertake CRB checks for the purposes of pre-employment checks for relevant roles, and would do so again should the employee change their role in the organisation,if appropriate.

  • How many staff are employed by the trust (substantive and temp)?
The SHA total headcount as at 31 December 2009 was 426 of which

Fixed Term = 80 – 51 in the East Midlands Healthcare Workforce Deanery (EMHWD), 3 in
